I was talking to some friends and someone asked me why, at the age of 30, I started taking theory lessons. And my first thought was “Bitch, because I want to!” BUT since this is a person who I like a lot and she didn’t meant anything by it, I toned down the hostility and answered her question sans profanity.
Anyway, part of the reason the question rankled was because she threw my age into it. Why shouldn’t a thirty year old, or someone of any age, pursue something that interests them? Why do we believe that children corner the market on developing new skills and having varied interests? Why is it so easy to believe that once you reach a certain age, it’s too late to learn and do dope shit? What is that about?! It is so limiting! Either way the time will pass and you will grow older. You may as well get older doing something that you care about or find cool.
So, if something intrigues you, try it! If you want to do something, do it! If you want to learn something, learn it! Yes, there will be challenges. Yes, there will be haters. DO IT ANYWAY! Don’t let boring, or scared, or whack people stop you from doing cool shit! More importantly, don’t stop yourself from doing cool shit!
Yes, I have my own inner critic that gives this same ol’ motif: “you should have started this modality YEARS AGO!” But newness is life, and stagnation is death, so I say always strive into new frontiers! And get that MUSICAL THEORY!!!
