As y’all may know, I have been working on this piece for the past little while. I was originally planning on playing it for my music school’s June recital, but now I’m kind of over it. My prediction is that I will be completely over it by June. It is hard for me to keep a piece performance ready when I am over it. So, I have decided to have an in-home concert sometime in the next month or so. This will be dope for several reasons:
- It will be another opportunity for me to improve my performance skills and increase my comfort level.
- This is the hardest piece I have attempted to date so heck yeah I’m going to perform it! I plan on being very proud of my progress with this piece. Also, music should be shared!
- I will have enough time to finish learning it to the best of my ability but not so much time that I’ll hate my life.
- This will help me continue my quest in life to do as much old-timey stuff as humanly possible. More below.
Before recorded music, and before musical instruments evolved into their current forms, music was frequently performed in people’s homes or other more intimate settings. In fact, concert halls are a relatively recent development. From what I can tell, fancy people would go to the homes of other fancy people and they would listen to still other fancy people play music.
What attracts me to this idea, aside from the innate bougieness of it, is the level of intimacy that can be achieved from a music performance in a smaller space. An audience is able to interact with the music and the musician because they are right there. There can be dialogue. The music becomes even more of a shared experience in environments like these. In fact, this dynamic is what I like most about my performance classes. The music automatically becomes more collaborative. It’s awesome! All that to say, I am VERY EXCITED about this and I am hoping this atmosphere helps me to not freak TF out. Stay tuned.
Ohhhh I wish I lived in Austin so I could attend said fancy house concert! You’ll have to hold another concert the next time I come to visit (YOU HAVE TO!).
